Hardwood FAQs
-
Solid hardwood is made from a single piece of wood, while engineered hardwood is constructed with a real wood surface layer over multiple layers underneath for added stability. Engineered hardwood is the more popular option in Southern California because it can be installed over concrete and tends to handle changes in temperature and humidity better. Solid hardwood typically requires a wood subfloor and cannot be installed directly over concrete.
-
Yes. Engineered hardwood has a real hardwood surface layer, often called a wear layer, over a layered core. This gives you the natural look and feel of real wood while providing more stability than traditional solid hardwood.
-
Engineered hardwood can often be installed over concrete using the appropriate installation method and moisture protection. Solid hardwood generally cannot be installed directly over concrete.
-
Hardwood can be a good choice for homes with pets, but the species, finish, and color you choose can make a difference. Harder wood species and more textured or matte finishes tend to hide everyday wear better than softer woods or high-gloss finishes. Keeping pet nails trimmed also helps reduce scratching.
-
It depends on the thickness of the wood’s wear layer. Solid hardwood can usually be refinished multiple times because the entire plank is real wood. Engineered hardwood can sometimes be refinished as well, but the number of times depends on how thick the real wood wear layer is. A thicker wear layer allows for more sanding and refinishing than a thinner one.

Installation time varies depending on the size and complexity of the project, but most hardwood installations are completed within about one to three weeks. Larger projects, floor preparation, or more detailed installation work can take longer.
